For more information, download the flyer below. 2013 SCMA Wine & Cheese Reception flyer Physicians converge on Capitol for CMA Leadership Conference Fifteen North Bay physicians--including Dr. Peter Bretan from Marin County--joined more than 400 of their colleagues from throughout the state for CMA’s annual Legislative Leadership Conference on April 16. Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom told the crowd during a morning session that “the issue of healthcare is the dominant challenge we face as it relates to balancing our budget.” Other morning speakers included CMA President Dr. Paul Phinney, Assemblymember Dr. Richard Pan and Peter Lee, who directs Covered California, the health benefit exchange mandated by the Affordable Care Act. The exchange, which is scheduled to open next January, will allow consumers to compare rates and select health insurance plans. After lunch, attendees headed off to meet with their legislators in the Capitol, perhaps heeding Dr. Pan’s advice to “talk about what you do every day in your practice--taking care of patients.” Dr. Georgianna Farren nominated as MMS President-Elect Dr. Georgianna Farren, an internist and director of the Marin Community Clinics, has been nominated as MMS President-Elect. She heads the list of nominees on this year’s MMS election ballots, which will be mailed to all members during the first week of May and are due back by May 31. The MMS board of directors recently approved retaining the current officers, so Dr. Irina deFischer will continue as president during 2013-14. Other physicians renominated to the MMS board include Drs. Anne Cummings and Peter Bretan. Dr. Lori Selleck has been nominated as a delegate to CMA. Marin Medicine wins international award Marin Medicine has won an Award of Merit (third place) in the International Summit Awards sponsored by the Society for Technical Communication, the world’s largest organization of technical writers and editors. The magazine was entered into the international competition after taking top honors in the STC’s Northern California region. The international event drew hundreds of entries from around the world. Physicians invited to Immunization Coalition meeting on May 9 Local physicians interested in raising immunization rates for vaccine-preventable diseases are encouraged to attend the May 9 meeting of the Marin Immunization Coalition. The meeting--to be held at the Marin County Office of Education, 1111 Las Gallinas Drive, San Rafael--will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Immunization Coalition is a nonprofit group focused on raising immunization rates and providing immunization education for all age groups in Marin County. Teen dating violence workshop at Marin General on June 8 Did you know that one in three teenagers in the United States is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner? To help physicians and nurses identify and respond to teen dating violence, the Center for Domestic Peace is sponsoring a free workshop on Saturday afternoon, June 8, in the conference center at Marin General Hospital. Participants will learn to recognize and screen for teen dating violence; learn how to assess for risk; and identify three strategies to increase awareness and prevention. Teen Dating Violence workshop flyer Resolutions for CMA House of Delegates needed by June 30 Resolutions for the CMA District 10 caucus are due by June 30. The caucus is the first stop on the way to the CMA House of Delegates, which meets this fall to consider resolutions from around the state. Submitting resolutions to the House of Delegates is the most direct way for members to influence CMA’s policies and activities, including its advocacy agenda. Resolutions can address virtually any medical practice or health-related topic, or any aspect of the policies and activities of organized medicine. Dr. Gullion, who developed the integrative oncology program for patients at the Marin Cancer Institute, is medical director of the Center for Integrative Health and Wellness at Marin General Hospital. RESOURCES The latest Medscape Physician Compensation Report finds that orthopedic surgeons were the top-earning specialists nationwide in 2012, with an average annual compensation of $405,000, more than twice as much as psychiatrists, internists, family physicians and pediatricians. The annual survey found that compensation for almost all physicians continued to increase in 2012, with average earnings around the country well in excess of $200,000.
