Want extra copies of 2012-13 Marin County Physician Directory?

Each MMS member received one free copy of the 2012-13 Marin County Physician Directory earlier this summer. Additional copies of the directory, which lists every practicing physician in the county, are available to members for just $30 each. Nonmember physicians and health care facilities can purchase the directory for $40, or $35 each when purchasing five or more. Cost to the general public is $55 per copy. To order by phone with a credit card, contact Rachel Pandolfi at 415-924-3891. You can also order online at www.marinmedicalsociety.org/directory or by printing the order form below and faxing to 415-924-2749.

2012-13 Marin Directory order form

The directory features detailed photographic listings for MMS members, including primary and secondary specialties, special medical interest, medical training, languages spoken and complete contact information. Nonmember listings include primary specialty, city and phone number only. The directory also includes a specialty index and an exhaustive list of medical resources in Marin County.

Buck Institute study finds rapamycin may be effective for cardiomyopathy

A study published by Buck Institute and other researchers in the July 25 issue of Science Translational Medicine found that the immunosuppressant drug rapamycin extended survival in mice suffering from a genetic mutation that leads to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and rare muscular dystrophies. The mutation may account for about one-third of the patients diagnosed with DCM.

“What’s particularly exciting is that this work offers a therapeutic possibility where there has been none,” said Dr. Brian Kennedy, senior author and Buck Institute CEO. “This study, along with others, suggests that clinical trials of rapamycin and its derivatives be initiated for human patients suffering from this form of DCM.”
