Boston Declares Health Emergency Amid U.S. Flu Outbreak; Resources for Health Care Providers

The country is in the grip of three emerging flu or flulike epidemics. Encouraging vaccinations is one of the most effective steps in combating what looks to be a serious strain of the flu. SFMS has compiled a list of flu information and resources for health care providers.

Insurance Commissioner Opposes Anthem Rate Increase

Today’s San Francisco Chronicle reports that California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said a rate increase proposed by Anthem Blue Cross on small employers is unreasonable. He also said the insurer should not charge Affordable Care Act fees in 2013, since the federal government won’t collect that money until 2014.

AMA Update on Medicare Payment Rates

The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 was signed into law Jan. 2, 2013. The new law averts the 26.5% SGR cut for all of 2013 and the 2% sequester for the next two months. It also extends the work GPCI floor for a year. Today CMS released the attached announcement regarding updated 2013 Medicare payment amounts, claims processing, and reopening of the participation enrollment period.
