AMA Statement on Senate Debate on Health System Reform Yesterday afternoon Senate leadership overcame the first legislative hurdle in their attempt to pass potentially devastating health care legislation. With the motion to proceed vote deadlocked at 50-50, the Vice President cast the deciding vote in favor of moving forward. This is serious! The Senate will now take votes over the next few days in an attempt to pass legislation that could, depending on the version, result in anywhere between 22 – 32 million people losing their health care coverage according to the latest figures from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Update on Senate Health Reform Bill and AMA Polling Results The American Medical Association(AMA) released the results of seven public opinion polls of registered voters in states that will be pivotal in determining the outcome of pending health reform legislation in the Senate (Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia). Six of the seven polls were conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, which is the firm that conducts polls for the Wall Street Journal and NBC News.
