Long-time Medical Society CEO to Retire

San Francisco Marin Medical Society (SFMMS) Executive Director and CEO, Mary Lou Licwinko, announced that after 21 years, she will be retiring at the end of 2019. Licwinko made the announcement at the medical society’s General Membership Meeting on Monday evening at the Golden Gate Yacht Club where more than 80 physician members were gathered.

SFMMS is a professional association representing more than 2,000 physicians, medical students, residents and fellows throughout San Francisco and Marin. Founded in 1868, the medical society unites the local physician community to champion public health initiatives and advocate for patients, and serves the professional needs of physicians.

“It has been my pleasure to work with such amazing physicians over the last 21 years. One of my proudest achievements has been to merge the San Francisco Medical Society with the Marin Medical Society to unite the physicians who live and work in the two counties. I know going forward, these wonderful physicians will continue to admirably represent physicians and their patients throughout the Bay Area,” said Licwinko.

SFMMS President, Dr. Kimberly Newell Green, commented “Mary Lou has been a truly remarkable leader of SFMMS for the past 21 years. She is a master of advocacy, a supporter of physicians and of medicine and of the communities and patients that we all care for. We would not be in this position of strength and impact as an organization without her.”

Licwinko grew up in Washington, DC and China Lake, California.  She earned her Masters of Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health and her Juris Doctor degree from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law. She began working at the medical society, then the San Francisco Medical Society, in November 1998.

Throughout her tenure with the medical society, Licwinko has served on various city-wide health care task forces, community organization boards and California Medical Association committees. In 2017, she successfully merged the San Francisco Medical Society and the Marin Medical Society to form the San Francisco Marin Medical Society.

Newell Green added, “Mary Lou’s shoes will not be easy to fill, but I feel confident that with Mary Lou’s help, and the stewardship of our Board, we will emerge with a new leader who will continue to grow and evolve this important organization.”
