Marin Physicians Asked to Refer Marin County Patients Who Meet Criteria for COVID-19 Testing to Drive Through Testing Location

A drive through referral-based testing option is available for physicians in Marin who determine: a) COVID-19 testing is indicated, and b) that such testing is not feasible within their own setting. Results will come to Public Health and will be communicated to clinicians directly to communicate to their patients.

Marin County Public Health is not recommending testing individuals with mild respiratory illness with no known exposure to COVID-19. Currently Marin County Public Health will accept in the field testing site patients who meet these criteria:

  1. Symptomatic patients (includes health care workers) who have had close contact with a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patient;
  2. Patients with moderate and persistent respiratory illness, subjective or objective fevers and one or more clinical findings of respiratory illness (e.g., cough, shortness of breath, or hypoxia) who do not respond to initial therapy and/or who do not have an alternative explanatory diagnosis;
  3. Able to travel in their own vehicle to a centrally located testing site in Marin;
  4. Resident of Marin County.

Clinicians must make it clear that patients will have to self-quarantine pending results of their test, and the need for strict quarantine after a positive test.

For patients meeting this criteria, clinicians can use this form to schedule a drive-up testing visit. Click yes to the question “Is this patient being referred for field based testing” at the end of the form and one of our staff will contact the patient within a day to arrange an appointment to the field testing site.

This is one step to address the need for testing—depending on demand we may need to modify the process or criteria to prioritize testing.
