Melissa Lin, MD: SFMS June 2013 Member of the Month July 1, 2013 Member of the Month, SFMS Member Melissa Lin, Pacific Family Practice Medical Group, SFMS Member of the Month 0 Melissa Lin, MD, is a board certified family physician at Pacific Family Practice Medical Group. She has been in practice at Pacific Family Practice since 2009 after relocating to San Francisco from Los Angeles. Dr. Lin was raised in Southern California. Her father, a long-time family physician in private practice, was a significant role model for her when growing up and when making the decision to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Lin received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine and completed residency training at UCLA. In her spare time, Dr. Lin enjoys the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is happily married and a mother of two young children. Dr. Lin is actively involved with her local mother’s club. She also has an interest in local and international medical missions which has brought her to Mexico, India, and Jamaica thus far. Dr. Lin's practice interests include optimization and management of chronic disease, routine continuity care for patients and their families, preventative medicine, family planning, women’s health, and pediatrics. As a new memebr, I look forward to meeting with and working with more colleagues in the local medical community. I think the most helpful SFMS member resource is the San Francisco Medicine journal. It's a useful resource for news and information about health care issues affecting local physicians. The most important thing I learned in medical school or residency is the value of being an advocate for my patients and helping them navigate the health care system. I also learned the importance of validating my patients and their concerns. My greatest achievement outside of practicing medicine is I am a proud mother of two children: Nathan, age 2.5 years, and Ava, age 9 months. What are some of the biggest opportunities or challenges you see in health care within the next five years? Working in private practice family medicine, the biggest challenges will be taking the necessary steps to become a patient-centered medical home and providing innovative, quality, and cost effective care within the context and setting of accountable care organizations. I love practicing Family Medicine because it allows me to pursue my broad spectrum of interests in preventative medicine, family planning, women’s health, pediatrics, and chronic disease.
