SFDPH Immunization Program to Offer an Immunization Skills Institute Training

The San Francisco Department of Public Health Immunization Program is excited to be offering an Immunization Skills Institute training on Wednesday, November 20th, 2019.  Immunization Skills Institute, or “ISI”, uses the CDPH Immunization Branch’s standard curriculum and is a competency-based, in-person course for health care personnel who currently prepare and administer immunizations.  ISI was developed specifically for Medical Assistants (MAs), but can be attended by anyone who provides immunizations.

ISI focuses on the skills and techniques needed for:

  • Injectable, oral, and nasal vaccine administration
  • After care and documentation
  • Vaccine storage and handling
  • Staff safety and training

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Name the recommended needle gauge and length for intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) injections
  • Practice preparing injectable vaccines using aseptic technique
  • Demonstrate IM and SQ injections using proper techniques
  • Identify at least two recommended sites for IM and SQ injections
  • State the recommended temperature ranges for refrigerated and frozen vaccines
  • List at least three things that must be documented at every vaccine encounter
