SFMMS 150th: 1870 - SF Grows and Boasts Two Medical Institutions

By 1870, San Francisco had become the tenth largest city in the United States with a population of nearly 150,000. The telegraph had established a link with the East, the Transcontinental Railway was nearing completion, and San Francisco had a public library, theaters, an opera house, and two medical institutions – the Toland Medical College, which later became UCSF Medical School and one of the Top 10 medical institutions in the world, and Cooper Medical College, which later became Stanford Medical School.
