University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health Hosts Free Educational Event Concerning Chronic Fatigue Syndrome February 14, 2018 Public Health UCB 0 Enjoy a FREE community educational event hosted by the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health and co-sponsored by the Stanford ME/CFS Initiative. WHY: Myalgic encephalomyelitis/ chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) may be themost common disease you've never heard of: At least 1 million Americans are affected, more than better-known conditions such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis Up to 90% of people affected remain undiagnosed. Many are misdiagnosed with depression or anxiety. Others are labelled as hypochondriacs or malingerers. Half of medical textbooks/ resources don’t mention ME/CFS. Only a third of medical schools educate about the condition, even if superficially. There are no effective treatments currently. Some promoted management techniques, like encouraging aerobic exercise, if not done carefully, can harm rather than help patients.
